Zero-click commerce: the end of the click and what it means for your store

More and more often the customer gets an answer to a buying question right away, in the results or from an AI assistant, and never lands on your site. What that means for your store, why it is not the end of the world, and how to become the source of the answer the model shows the buyer instead of losing traffic.

Zero-click commerce is when the customer gets a ready answer to a buying question right away, in the search results or in a conversation with an AI assistant, and never clicks through to your store. For an eCommerce owner this means two things at once. Some queries will send less traffic to your site, because the customer got what they were after before landing anywhere. But a new place to win appears: the content of the answer itself, the one the model builds for the buyer. This article explains where zero-click comes from, why its share is growing, and what concretely to do so that instead of losing customers at the answer stage, you become the source of that answer. No panic, and no promise that you can fully control it, because you cannot.

Key takeaways

  • Zero-click is when the customer gets an answer without visiting a site. It is not a passing fad: the share of such queries is growing alongside AI assistants, in-result summaries and shopping agents.
  • For a store it is a shift in the point of contact, not an ending. Some queries will send less traffic, but a new place to win appears: the content of the answer the model builds for the buyer. The point is to be its source.
  • Adapting comes down to five things: content that answers directly, correct structured data, citable specifics, a consistent recognizable brand, and measuring visibility in AI rather than clicks alone.
  • Honestly: no one controls what the model shows, and no one will guarantee a citation. You can systematically raise your odds and measure the effect, not buy a spot in the answer.

What zero-click looks like in practice

Zero-click, literally „no click", is any search or query that ends with the user holding an answer but without a visit to the source page. It is not an invention of the AI era. You have known it for years: you ask Google for opening hours or an exchange rate and the number appears right in the results, no click needed. What is new is how far this mechanism now reaches, and how deep it cuts into buying decisions.

Today the no-click answer takes several forms at once: a featured snippet and knowledge panel in classic results, an AI-generated summary above the list of links, an assistant answer in something like ChatGPT or Perplexity, and finally a recommendation from an agent that browses offers on the customer's behalf. The common denominator is one: there no longer has to be a visit to your site between the buyer's question and their decision. A buyer asks „a reliable espresso machine for a home office under 2000 zloty", gets a ready shortlist with specific models and reasoning, and part of the buying journey happens without a single click into any store.

Why the share of zero-click is growing

It is not one switch someone flipped, but three trends running in parallel. I will not quote a single growth percentage here, because such numbers vary between studies and go stale quickly. The direction, though, is consistent: the share of queries ending without a site visit is rising, and they reach ever deeper into the product-choice phase.

  • AI assistants as the starting point. More and more questions that once went to a search engine, people now put straight to ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini and accept the answer as a conversation, not a list of links to sift through.
  • In-result summaries. Search engines increasingly show a generated synthesis above the classic results. For many informational and comparison queries that synthesis is enough, so the click into a link simply does not happen.
  • Shopping agents. Tools are emerging that do not just answer but act: compare offers, filter by criteria, and eventually close the purchase. To them your site is data to process, not a place to visit. How to prepare a store for this scenario we cover separately in the piece on how to prepare your store for agentic commerce.

What it really means for your store

The first reaction tends to be panic: „if the customer does not visit my site, I lose traffic and sales". That is half the truth, and the worst half to act on. Yes, for some queries, especially purely informational and comparison ones, site traffic will drop. A customer who got their answer in an AI summary will not click your article, though they would have before. You will not undo that.

The second half matters more, and is easy to miss. Zero-click does not remove the decision stage, it moves it elsewhere. Instead of ten blue links the customer chooses from, there is one answer that recommends someone or leaves them out. If it is your brand and your product in that answer, you win attention at the very moment the decision is made, often before competitors even know a game is on. If you are not there, for some customers you cease to exist at exactly that stage. The point of contact has shifted, not vanished.

Rule of thumb: stop counting zero-click purely as a lost click and start counting it as a new place of exposure. The question is not „how do I win that click back", but „am I in the answer the customer gets instead of that click".

What you lose and what to build on

It is worth spelling this out. On the left, what you genuinely lose or what weakens in a zero-click world. On the right, how to recover it or what to build an advantage on when the click itself stops being the main currency.

What weakens under zero-clickHow to recover it or what to build on
Traffic from informational and comparison queriesPresence in the AI answer itself: being a cited source and a brand in the recommendation, not just a link on a list
Control over the first impression (your page, your layout)A consistent, unambiguous brand entity across your site and beyond, so the model describes you the way you want to be described
The click as the main measure of successMeasuring visibility in AI: whether your brand and products appear in answers, how often and in what context
The blue-link position as the goalContent citability: concrete facts, numbers and answers the model can lift and pass on
Traffic attribution in classic analyticsTracking mentions and traffic from generative answers separately, aware that some of the impact stays indirect

Zero-click does not erase value, it moves it. The right column is work that serves classic results and generative answers at the same time.

How to adapt: five things that actually work

The good news is that you do not need a separate „for AI" strategy. It is the same solid work you should be doing for customers and for Google anyway, tilted toward citability. Five elements, in order, starting from the foundation.

Content that answers directly

A model builds its answer from fragments that make sense lifted out of context. Start with the answer, not a warm-up. Add question-and-answer sections. Give specifics instead of circling the topic. A page that genuinely answers the buyer's question is a better source than one that sounds nice but settles nothing.

Correct structured data

Structured data (schema.org) tells the machine outright what is a product, a price, a brand, a review and a fact, instead of leaving it to guess from the text. For a store this is foundational, because shopping agents and generative engines read exactly this data to compare offers. How to lay it out for AI reading we cover in a separate piece on structured data for AI.

Citable specifics

A specific with context gets passed on more readily than a generality. Names, parameters, prices, conditions, dates, a clear „who this is for and who it is not". The less a model has to guess from your content, the more confidently it uses it as a source instead of reaching for a competitor who said it plainly.

A recognizable, consistent brand

The model has to confidently tie a fact to your brand, not to another with a similar name. The same name, description and company details across your site and beyond build an unambiguous entity that is easy to cite without error. A recognizable brand wins the recommendation over an anonymous store, because a model would rather recommend what it can name unambiguously.

Measuring visibility in AI, not just clicks

If you measure clicks alone, in a zero-click world you will see a decline and miss the wins. Start tracking whether your brand and products appear in model answers, how often and in what context. That is the measure that shows presence where classic analytics goes silent. We go deeper on the mechanics of GEO and measurement in the piece on GEO for eCommerce.

An honest caveat: what you do not control

This is worth saying plainly, because the market is full of promises with nothing behind them. No one controls exactly what a model will show in an answer, and no one will guarantee you a citation or a spot in the recommendation. AI systems change from week to week, and their choice of sources is opaque. All you can do is systematically raise your odds: be available, citable, consistent and measurable. That is real leverage, but leverage on probability, not a switch. Anyone promising you a guaranteed place in a ChatGPT answer is selling something that does not exist.

Where we fit in

At Seedlight we treat visibility in AI as part of maintaining and growing a platform, not as separate magic. In the Maintenance and Growth stage of the BEAM framework we shape content for citability, tidy up structured data and help build measurement that shows your brand's presence in model answers, not just clicks in classic analytics. No promises of positions or citations, because no one controls those. Instead, concrete work that serves Google and generative engines at once, plus honest measurement so you can see whether it pays off. If zero-click is taking your traffic and you do not know whether you are in the answers instead of that traffic, that is exactly the problem we work on.

The end of the click is not the end of the store. It is the end of the assumption that the only path from a customer to you is a visit to your site. Zero-click moves the moment of decision into the answer the customer gets from a machine, and that is the new place where you are either seen or not. Awareness of the trend, calm work on citability, and measurement instead of panic are the whole difference between being the source of the answer and disappearing from the customer's view at the stage where you matter most.

FAQ

Does zero-click mean site traffic stops mattering?

No. Traffic from some queries will drop, especially informational and comparison ones, but transactional and navigational queries still lead to the site. The role changes: alongside clicks, presence in the AI answer itself now counts. Best to work both channels at once.

How do I measure visibility in AI answers when there is no click?

By tracking whether your brand and products appear in model answers, how often and in what context, instead of watching clicks alone in classic analytics. We break down the mechanics of GEO and measurement in the piece on GEO for eCommerce.

Can I guarantee my store shows up in a ChatGPT answer?

No, and be wary of anyone who promises it. No one controls how models pick sources. You can only systematically raise your odds: availability, citable content, correct structured data and a consistent brand. That is leverage on probability, not a guarantee.

Where should I start adapting my store to zero-click?

With content that answers directly, and with correct structured data, because that is what generative engines and shopping agents read. Then citable specifics, a consistent brand, and measuring visibility in AI rather than clicks alone.
